The Emmental Cooking Pot

My obsession with trying to identify Nestor and his »peers« as adherents and keepers of an old mystical tradition flared up again.

By now, more than a year had passed since I had been searching for testimonials of a non-Christian group or even movement in the Emmental, the members of which, as Nestor had expressed, were striving for a unification of opposites. But the search had been a failure, and I wasn’t able to draw a secret with respect to such a tradition from Nestor and his neighbors that would have answered my questions. Finally I had given up that search, and instead I followed Nestor’s advice and concentrated on the perfect restoration of the secretaire.

But now the situation was different. The following conversations I had with Nestor about mouches volantes always ended in dialogues about Nestor and his neighbors, who they were and what they did here on the left side of the Emme. According to him, they were exploring the origin and structure of the picture beyond duality; in order to do this, they were searching for answers in their own consciousness. As a result of their endeavors, they had revealed a so-called »basic structure« they could perceive with their »inner sense«. Piquant: this basic structure, he claimed, was not something aloof, detached or inaccessible; rather, the first emergences of this structure could be perceived by many, if not most people – ophthalmology identifies them as particles in the eye and throws them into the general pot »mouches volantes«.

The revelation and perception of the basic structure was a process that Nestor called »seeing«. And he called the people on the left side of the Emme, including himself, »seers«. It soon turned out that this term – that I had, at first, interpreted as a spontaneous inspiration and associated with fields of activity such as »prophecy«, »magic« and »occultism« – belonged to the general vocabulary Nestor used. Whenever he talked about »seers« he didn’t only refer to the activity and the knowledge of the people on the left side in connection with it, but he also used the word so as to distinguish between them and other people that were not able to recognize the dots and strands as something that has come about through the basic structure of the picture that in turn was a product of consciousness.

As I had failed with my attempt to »enlighten« Nestor with respect to the eye floater phenomenon, I changed my tactical approach. Now the people on the left side of the Emme should be my object of study again. I wanted to find out about their knowledge and their viewpoints on mouches volantes.
